Meet Singer and Cosplayer Angel Rose

One of our favorite parts of attending fan conventions each year is meeting the kick-ass cosplay community. We're always inspired by the passion, creativity, and craftsmanship that cosplayers pour into bringing their favorite characters to life. This year, we had the pleasure of meeting Angel Rose. She's not only a talented cosplayer but she is also an emerging artist in the music industry, and we're thrilled to announce that she'll be performing at our Second Annual Anime Fan & Fitness Festival this September at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, CA! But before you meet her in person, we'd love to introduce you to the talented artist behind the cosplay. Here's a little more about Angel Rose and her incredible journey.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in both cosplay and music.

I have always loved to sing and dress up; so much so that when I was about 5 years old I found my Bio- dad’s high beam construction light, got into a sparkly fairy outfit and put on a show in front of my bedroom mirror for 4 hours. I ended up staring at the light the whole time! Now I'm Legally Blind. But I wanted to be on stage and in the spotlight. It felt like home.

Throughout my life I’ve continued to have this whimsy by collecting costumes, props, and even puppets (A lot of people don’t know this but I'm a trained puppeteer and voice-actor). I didn’t know about the con/cosplay community until about 3 years ago when my boyfriend introduced me. I love the energy that cons bring and the fact that we can all nerd out over our favorite fandoms.

Currently, I am pursuing my music career. I blend all of my passions together to create mental health based fantasy pop music. This allows me to create the Angel Rose Universe. Each song/video has unique characters that people can relate to. My biggest dream is to be the voice for those unheard, and build a platform for change through art. 

What inspired you to begin cosplaying, and what was your very first cosplay?

I have always loved costuming, but when I started cosplaying professionally, my first one was Poison Ivy. I made the boots by gluing leaves all over them and had a lot of fun with the makeup. 

Is there a particular cosplay that you're most proud of? What makes it special to you?

I’m really proud of my Rouge the Bat because I made a lot of the pieces. The corset was fun because I took a pink corset, painted everything black but the heart and glued fluff on it. I’m currently working on making her wings to replace the store-bought ones.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the cosplay community?

I really enjoy everyone’s individuality. No one is the same. We all embrace our unique traits and everyone celebrates one another's achievements. The best way to describe it would be that we are all proud of who we are.

When did you discover your passion for singing and performing?

I would not shut up as a kid. My parents would yell at me through the wall to stop singing because I would do it all day. My mom was an Opera Singer and used to sing to us all the time. There was a point in my life where my bio dad went to jail and we were homeless. My mom, me, and my 3 younger siblings would walk everywhere going to the next shelter to shelter. My mom would entertain us by pointing at a bench or a tree and saying “Let’s write a song about it”. As a family we would create music to get through the hard times. This really showed me that art has the power to heal and help people. So now I write all of my songs with that intention. 

Who are some of your biggest influences, both as a cosplayer and as a musical artist?

In music I really look up to artists like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Marolyn Monroe, and Rapper Mz 007. All of these people used their platforms to help others. Plus, they were/are all incredible performers. As for Cosplay, I would definitely say @scuba.steph because she created the fast food house and really took cosplay to another level.

Have cosplay and music influenced each other in your creative journey? If so, how?

Absolutely! I intertwine them both.

Do you have a favorite anime, manga, or fictional character outside the anime world that have had the biggest impact on your life?

I mean sometimes, you watch a movie one time and it becomes your personality… Ariel from The little mermaid is my favorite Character because She sings, has red hair, and the first time we met my stepdad we were watching the little mermaid 2. I will never forget that. Also, Jodi Benson is an incredible voice actress, and we have similar voice styles.

If you were to give one piece of advice for those wanting to get into cosplay and/or music, what would you tell them?

Don’t wait till “the time is right” It never will be with that mindset. If you love something, do it. Network, create things, and NEVER GIVE UP! You have to let go of that fear. Just jump in. It will probably be chaotic at first, but you will learn and grow stronger from it. But also remember you can’t do it all alone. Lean on your friends, family, and supporters. You got this!
