Boykins Cosplay Bringing Characters to Life

One of the greatest parts of being involved in the fandom and cosplay community is the opportunity to meet passionate creators who bring their favorite characters to life while inspiring others along the way. Recently, I had the privilege of connecting with Boykins Cosplay, a talented cosplayer, actor, and fitness enthusiast whose dedication to both performance and craftsmanship has helped him make a lasting impact within the community.

Known online for standout cosplays such as Bowser, Tengen Uzui, Barett Wallace and Black Panther portrayals, Boykins approaches cosplay as more than just a costume, it's an opportunity to fully embody a character and tell a story. In this spotlight, Boykins shares his cosplay journey, fitness inspiration, and valuable advice for both new and experienced cosplayers alike.

Life Outside of Cosplay

By day, I work as a Non-Emergency Transporter for local hospitals throughout Northern Nevada. Outside of my 9-to-5, I'm also an actor and dedicated cosplayer who loves bringing iconic characters to life.

When Did Your Cosplay Journey Begin

While I officially began cosplaying in 2019, my journey really started at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017 and 2018. Long before that, I had been immersed in comics, superheroes, and pop culture since I was about six years old.

Beyond The Wearing the Cosplay

Online, many people recognize me for cosplays such as Barret Wallace from Final Fantasy VII Remake, Killer Bee from Naruto, and Bowser from the Mario franchise. Locally in Reno, however, I'm probably best known for my Black Panther/T'Challa portrayals.

When people ask which cosplay is my favorite, my answer is always the same: all of them.

For me, cosplay goes beyond simply wearing a costume. I approach each character the same way an actor prepares for a role. I study their mannerisms, speech patterns, body language, and personality traits. I think about how they would walk, talk, and interact with people—whether from their own universe or another. That commitment to performance has helped me grow within the cosplay community and build a recognizable reputation.

Many of the characters I portray reflect qualities I see within myself—whether that's resilience, leadership, determination, or even anger that has been transformed into strength. I also appreciate that many of these characters are people of color and are thoughtfully written, providing meaningful representation that resonates with me.

Favorite Builds

One of the most memorable projects I've worked on was my Bowser cosplay, which was commissioned by my friend Jacqui, also known as @Pepperjaq. She spent roughly one to two months bringing that build to life.

My Barret Wallace cosplay was both the most challenging and the most rewarding project I've completed. I modified a coat and belt from scratch and built the iconic gun arm prop myself. The prop alone took nearly three months to complete, making it the largest and most ambitious cosplay prop I've created so far.

Essential Cosplay Tools

There are three items I never want to cosplay without:

  • My sewing machine, so I can stop borrowing my friends' machines whenever I need to repair a seam.

  • A large supply of super glue, which has saved countless costume emergencies.

  • My X-Acto knife, which has helped shape and carve designs into nearly every major cosplay project I've built.

Where I Source Materials

I buy materials wherever I can find them. EVA foam used to come from JoAnn Fabrics and Michaels, while paints, adhesives, and tools often come from places like Harbor Freight and Walmart. I also regularly pick up clothing items that might eventually become part of a future cosplay build.

Fitness, Sports, and Dragon Ball Z

Before cosplay, athletics played a major role in my life. I'm a former collegiate athlete who competed in football, basketball, and several track and field events. I've also been passionate about fitness since I was six years old. Watching Dragon Ball Z inspired me to train, get stronger, and continually push my limits. Today, you'll often find me at Fitness Connection playing basketball for cardio and lifting weights for strength and conditioning.

Outside the gym, I enjoy karaoke and dancing at local nightclubs, which is another fun way to stay active and burn calories.

What Makes the Cosplay Community Special

The cosplay community is one of the most welcoming communities I've ever been a part of.

Like any community, it has its flaws. But what stands out to me is the incredible sense of connection. Every convention feels like a gathering of like-minded people who are excited to share their passions in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.

Through cosplay, I've built friendships that have become family. I've also formed partnerships with organizations and businesses that I never would have met otherwise. The opportunities and relationships cosplay has created are something I'll always be grateful for.

Two Rules for Great Cosplay

1. Be Respectful

This is something most of us were raised to understand. Don't engage in racism or blackface. Anyone can cosplay any character, but changing your skin color to match another race or ethnicity is unnecessary and disrespectful. Be mindful of others' feelings and avoid comparing cosplayers by saying things like, "Your cosplay is way better than theirs."

KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY.

2. Have Fun

Most cosplayers aren't getting paid to do this. You don't need the same body type, skin color, height, or appearance as a character to cosplay them. The cosplay community thrives when people feel comfortable expressing themselves and celebrating the characters they love.

Put on the costume, embrace the character, and enjoy the experience.

Final Advice for New Cosplayers

If you don't know how to sew, craft, or build props, don't let that stop you. There are thousands of talented cosplayers and creators willing to share their knowledge. You can find tutorials, books, YouTube videos, online communities, and step-by-step guides covering nearly every aspect of cosplay creation.

Ask questions when you can. Learn from others when possible. And if you're too shy to ask, there are countless resources available to help you develop the skills you need. The most important step is simply getting started.

If you'd like to meet Boykins in person, learn more about cosplaying or want to ask him about any cosplaying tips, be sure to join us at our Second Annual Anime Fan and Fitness Festival on September 19, 2026, in Gilroy, California. Whether you're a longtime cosplayer, an anime fan, a fitness enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun and welcoming community event, we'd love to have you there.

And don't forget to follow Boykins on Instagram at Boykins_Cosplay to see his latest cosplay projects, convention appearances, behind-the-scenes builds, and future character transformations.

We look forward to seeing you all at the festival! Who knows, you may even get the chance to meet Black Panther, Barret Wallace, Bowser, or one of Boykins' many other incredible characters in person!
